SOFT DEVELOPABLES

SOFT DEVELOPABLES is a collaboration between designers Michelle Shields and Heleen Sintobin, facilitated by digital fabrication lab Grymsdyke Farm.

A cabinet of objects and on-going experiments showcase experimental material research into commonly found materials in ceramic studios. An experimental porcelain formula creates a new clay body which is subverted by the firing process, turning the clay into a geological lightweight expanded structure.

The collection explores the aesthetic language of digital crafting within contemporary ceramics. The objects showcase milling with the robotic arm onto wet clay, exploring the fingerprint of the machine and unpacks robotic technology from a craft perspective.

Informed by pattern cutting, the robotic arm mills structural toolpaths which are then folded by hand into soft hybrid developable forms. After firing the milled structures expand and convert digital perfection into soft shapes.
